The UCLA Triathlon Team is an official club sport of the University of California, Los Angeles. We welcome athletes at all levels from beginner to elite, and help them reach their multisport goals. Although the team is student-run, we welcome faculty, staff, alumni, and community members to the team! All levels of experience are welcome! The team is a founding member of the West Coast Collegiate Triathlon Conference (WCCTC) and competes in the WCCTC races (sprint and Olympic distance races). Position Summary:

UCLA is looking for a talented individual to expand and build upon our history of excellence at club sport level. The UCLA Team has approximately 100 members including students, faculty, staff, alumni, and community members mainly from the West Los Angeles area. As Head Coach your primary role is to be a team leader who motivates, teaches, and pushes our members to achieve their unique personal goals within the framework of the collegiate triathlon season.

The successful candidate will be a creative coach who implements a program that can meet the diverse needs of our membership base, namely competitive athletes (triathletes but also duathletes and aquathletes) and non-competitive physical fitness triathletesall within the academic and social context of a university.

The ideal candidate will have experience coaching on the pool deck as well as experience coaching open water and pack swimming, cycling, and running (track and distance). The individual should have the ability to take a team to a race and coach them to success whether racing their first triathlon or defending their national championship, or even as a club participant serving as a timer, pit support, etc.

The individual we are seeking must be familiar with, and follow, WCCTC rules and guidelines, as well as USA Triathlon (USAT) rules and guidelines. The successful candidate will have a demonstrated commitment to the sport of triathlon.

The Head Coach, together with the Team President and representatives from the UCLA Department of Recreation, will oversee program scheduling, workout design and periodization, and supervision of the assistant coaches (volunteer and staff). Together with the Team President and other officers, the Head Coach will represent the team and its interests to other constituencies, both internal and external to UCLA. We are seeking someone who will bring energy and passion to the program, be able to work with a diverse recreation staff, and who can harness, engage, and focus the energy of volunteer leaders.

  • Operate a year round training program for the team, to include approximately 3-6 workouts per week
  • Workout times include early mornings, mid-days, evenings and weekends
  • Cater aspects of the program to the different member segments
  • Attend regular UCLA Recreation staff meetings, as required
  • Attend at least half of the WCCTC official races
  • Develop and host several triathlon workshops as fundraisers for the team
  • Work in conjunction with UCLA recreation staff and the Triathlon Team Officers on issues that concern the club as a whole
  • Promote the Team to the University community, (i.e. students, faculty, alumni, and staff) as well as assist in the outreach efforts of the student leadership
  • Manage the development of the Assistant Coaches
  • Work with the teams volunteer leadership board to establish team-wide competitive goals
  • Organize and implement various triathlon clinics (e.g., for the various disciplinesswimming, cycling, runningT1 and T2, nutrition, periodization, weight training for triathletes, open water swimming, nutrition, stretching, yoga for triathletes, etc.)

The exceptional candidate for this position will:
  • Possess and demonstrate a passion for the sport of triathlon
  • Have demonstrated leadership in managing, motivating and growing a team/program
  • Have prior coaching/instructional experience at the age group, collegiate, or professional level or higher
  • Possess formal triathlon coaching qualifications
  • Relate well to people, be accountable, and well organized
  • Be familiar with Microsoft Office
  • Possess or be prepared to apply for current CPR and First Aid certifications as well as USAT coaching credentials
  • Desire to work in a fun, supportive environment with other multisport professionals
  • Have a stellar reputation within the USAT community.
The Head Coach is expected to run the majority of all weekly workouts and to schedule regular coverage for all other workouts. The Coach is expected to consult with the volunteer team leadership to develop team-wide competitive priorities in order to develop a periodized training plan.


This is a part-time hourly position and compensation is commensurate with experience.
