Breaststroke: butterfly-legs before or after expell.-phase?

    Hello everybody,

Recently Ive heard about adding the butterfly-legs to the breaststroke.
At this moment Im training on technique. And now Ive this question: The butterfly-legs-movement does it have to be before or after the expelling phase?

    At this moment I do:

    1) arms-movement
    2) breaststroke-legs
    3) expelling phase (*), strectching the body for 1 to 2 seconds
    4) 1x butterfly-legs

(*) Hope this is the right English expression.

Goal is not competition swimming. But making my breaststroke more active; give it more speed.

Allready thanks for the answers. ;-)

Most people do it between phase 1 and 2 above. Just as your arms finish pulling down to your waist, then do the dolphin kick.

Others will do it in the middle of the breaststroke pull down (what you call the arms-movement). You start your pull and as you do, you do the butterfly kick, then finish as normal. If you watch underwater youtube videos from the London olympics, this is what you will see.

The butter fly kick MUST be done in a time from the arms first start to move apart till they reach the end of the pull. Even if SOME olympians do it illegally & get away with it ??!!

I am a little confused as to whether you are referring to the pullout(the first stroke underwater off the start and each turn) or the regular stroke.
In the pullout the dolphin kick cannot start before initiating the pull and must be completed before the breaststroke kick is started. Most swimmers either spread their hands slightly, dolphin kick, and then finish the pull or they dolphin kick during the pull.
In the regular stroke there isn't a separate dolphin kick, rather,as you begin the insweep of the pull you slightly bend at the back(arch your back) to shift your hips forward and then as you shoot your hands forward you bend slightly at the hips to get your hips up at the surface, finally at the end of the kick you raise your legs so that they are streamlined behind you completing the undulation.
